is Bhutan?

あなたは 聞いたことがありますか ブータンを

Have
you ever heard of Bhutan?
|
それは小さな国です 中国とインドの間に横たわる
|
It’s
a small country lying between China and India.
|
それは高いところにある 山脈の中の
|
It’s
very high in the mountains.
|
しかし そこに住む人々は 育てる たくさんの米や くだものや 野菜を。
|
But
people living there grow a lot of rice, fruit and vegetables.
|
ブータンの人々は言う 「50年前、私達の収穫は ずっと小さかった。
|
People
in Bhutan say, “Fifty years ago, our harvests were much smaller.
|
しかし 日本から来た男が 変えた 私達の 農業のやり方を。」
|
But
the man from Japan changed our way of farming.
|
その男の名前は にしおか けんじ だった。
|
The
man’s name was Nishioka Kenji.
|
飛ぶ、死につつある、横たわっている

1964年に 西岡はブータンに行った。

In
1964, Nishioka went to Bhutan.
|
彼は 言語を学んだ そこで話されている言語。
|
He
learned the language spoken there.
|
彼は教えたかった ブータン人に 新しい方法を
米を栽培する方法。
|
He
wanted to teach Bhutanese the new way to grow rice.
|
しかし彼らのほとんどが 関心を持たなかった。
|
But
most of them were not interested.
|
だから 彼は決心した 野菜を栽培することを まずはじめに。
|
So
he decided to grow vegetables first.
|
西岡は 種を植えた 日本から持ち込んだ種を。
|
Nishioka
planted seeds brought from Japan.
|
野菜たちのほとんどが よく育った。
|
Many
of the vegetables grew well.
|
人々は 驚いた そして（じぶんたちも）栽培したいと思った それたの野菜たちを。

People
were surprised and wanted to grow those vegetables, too.
|

Nishioka
taught the people how to grow them.

The
next year, they had a good harvest.

began to trust him.

the Bhutanese tried Nishioka’s way of growing rice.
|
そのうちに、米の収穫が 増加した。
|
In
time, the rice harvest increased.
|
人々は 頼んだ 彼に もっと助けて欲しいと
|
People
asked him to help them more.
|
西岡は 働き続けた そこで
彼が1992年に亡くなるまでずっと
|
Nishioka
kept working there
until
he died in 1992.
|
ブータンの人々は言う、「西岡は 教えた
私たちに たくさんのことを
|
People
in Bhutan say, “Nishioka taught us a lot.
|
彼の仕事は 変えた 私達の生活を そして
（これからも）私達を助けるだろう 長い間
|
His
work has changed our lives and will
help us for a long time.”

私たちに何ができる？ 他の人々を助けるために
|

can we do to help other people?
